Doin’ It For The Environment… And The Free Stuff

This week’s articles are all about getting the most bang for your buck, and what better way to save money than to get free products. Yes, free. You’d be surprised to find out how many beauty based brands have recycling programs that reward you for an activity that is (hopefully) already part of your routine. Did you know that recycling just six plastic bottles saves the same amount of energy that it takes to run a hairdryer for 30 minutes? I don’t know about you but I have about three times that amount of bottles just in hair care alone. Don’t judge, ya girl has got to stay stylin’. By recycling these empty products we can help out Mother Earth and if that isn’t enough here are four brands that give you an incentive to stop pretending you are Jordan and the trashcan is your hoop with those empties.

LUSH is one company who knows how to treat the earth. Their philosophy is based around ethics and being fresh. All their products are handmade, 100% vegetarian, and help fight animal testing. A majority of their products are packaged without plastic and the ones that are are made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic. With all these good vibes, no wonder they offer a recycle program. Bring back 5 empty, clean black pots to any LUSH store for recycling and receive a free face mask! They have amazing masks but if you haven’t tried it, get the Mask of Magnaminty! It has a spearmint smell that isn’t too over powering and helps clear your skin in one application!

I bet you have a couple almost empty MAC products laying on your vanity right now. But instead of chunking them in the garbage place them gently in a safe place and wait till you get a small collection of 6. I know that may seem like it would take forever considering MAC products can last a while but with the range of perfect products I promise it won’t take as long as you are imagining. BACK TO MAC is a program started by the company to share the importance of commitment to the environment with it’s consumers. Bring in 6 empty packaging containers to any MAC counter and receive a free lipstick. I have racked up on this perk considering their lipsticks are my favorite consistency on the market. You can even snag a limited edition lippie from a collection or any Viva Glam lipsticks to add to your collection.

Recycle and Be Rewarded is probably the easiest of all the programs. It has the same concept as a punch card from Mikes Deli on 10th, which I am a pro at by now. One full sized empty bottle = one stamp. On your 10th stamp you can choose any travel sized product to take home. You are even encouraged to bring in travel or sampled sized products for them to recycle, even though you won’t get a stamp for them. The bomb thing about this company is that it is not only sold at Kiehl’s stores. You can pick up this product line at Sephora, which means you can earn Sephora points while also collecting empties to turn in. It’s a win-win!

Okay, disclaimer Origins does not offer anything free that you can’t get any other given day you walk in when you recycle with their program, but the full heart and good karma you will get in return should really be enough. The plant based company has a bin at every location that allows beauty obsessed costumers to drop off any brand of cosmetic product packaging to be recycled by them and you receive a free sample of any product in the store. To reduce the amount of waste accumulating in landfills, this program goes hand in hand with with the brand’s work with Global ReLeaf. The first recycle program created by a cosmetic company, Origins has helped by recycling and using non-eligible items for energy recovery such as applicators, sharpeners, and sponges.

Let this little fact sink in: the EPA says that around 1/3 of the waste in our landfill is composed of cosmetic packaging. A lot of items you think can not be recycled actually can, like glass bottles, compact mirrors, metal lids, and cardboard shipping boxes. Yes, parting is such sweet sorrow when it comes to your favorite night cream or concealer but these programs make it a little bit easier to say bye-bye while also saving the world. You know what they always say, the best things in life are free.
