5 No BS Self Help Books To Help You Feel More Adult

Self Help books these days are not just cheesy, full of silly quotes, and whiney. Today these books help us as readers to step out of our comfort zones while also helping us to realize we are not the only ones going through certain stages in our life. It can be validating to see that other people went through our experiences and came out on top, or at least okay. They may not contain every answer or the key to the lock of your significant other’s heart but they do actually help. Here are my top picks of books to grab off that Self Help isle or download on your phone to help with those long drives.

       1. How to Be a Bawse by Lilly Singh

“This book does not include hopeful thoughts, lucky charms, or cute quotes. That’s because success, happiness, and everything else you want in life need to be worked for, not wished for. In Lilly’s world, there are no escalators, only stairs. Get ready to climb.”

The YouTube superstar Lilly Singh’s self help book is both hilarious and smart as hell. The advice given is straightforward and unique. Broken down into four parts, each is just a good as the last. I would definitely suggest downloading the audiobook which is read by the author and a couple guest stars. Her tone carries to book to new heights and she makes it even more hilarious than reading it yourself.

       2. Girl Boss by Sophia Amoruso

#GIRLBOSS proves that being successful isn’t about where you went to college or how popular you were in high school. It’s about trusting your instincts and following your gut; knowing which rules to follow and which to break; when to button up and when to let your freak flag fly.”

If you are a woman in the business world, or really any world, put this book on your list right now! The introduction by Lena Dunham, one of the coolest girl in Hollywood, sets the tone and the book gets even better from there. Sophia’s struggles and rise to own an empire is inspiring and proves that what you do today sets you up for tomorrow. The book even got turned into a Netflix original series (just as good as the book) and her website is even more popular now then when the book came out. This book is on every Buzzfeed list for a reason!

       3. Nice is Just a Place in France by The Betches

“Here are some highlights:

DON’T BE EASY.

DON’T BE POOR.

DON’T BE UGLY.

We didn’t come up with these life lessons. We’re just the ones who wrote it all down. This is not self-help. Self-help is for fat people and divorcées. This is how to deal with your problems when you have no problems. You’re welcome.”

Warning: do not read this if your feelings are easily hurt or your sense of humor is not laughing at someone when the fall, granted they are perfectly okay. I honestly didn’t read this for the self help part of it but it helped me more than I expected. At the point of my life I was just out into the work force and thought since I was young I didn’t have much to offer. WRONG. The Betches are the best at telling you, in a no bs way, how to win at life.

       4. My Boyfriend Barfed in My Handbag… And Other Things You Can’t Ask Martha by Jolie Kerr

“Thankfully, Jolie Kerr has both staggering cleaning knowledge and a sense of humor. With signature sass and straight talk, Jolie takes on questions ranging from the basic—how do I use a mop? —to the esoteric—what should I do when bottles of homebrewed ginger beer explode in my kitchen? My Boyfriend Barfed in My Handbag proves that even the most nightmarish cleaning conundrums can be solved with a smile, the right supplies, and a little music.”

Okay, Okay, I haven’t actually read this one but I did order it off Amazon. I love a book that makes me feel more adult but is also funny as hell. How do you get the love juice off your brand new couch or how do you get the bong water out of your carpet, asking for a friend obviously. Well, Jolie is here to answer these and all the other cleaning questions that you’re too embarrassed to ask a friend.

       5. Seriously… I’m Just Kidding by Ellen Degeneres

Seriously… I’m Kidding is a lively, hilarious, and often sweetly poignant look at the life of the much-loved entertainer as she opens up about her personal life, her talk show, and joining the judges table of American Idol.”

When I swooped this up off the Barnes and Noble shelf, I did so because I love Ellen. She is hilarious and kind and uplifting and so is this book. If you are looking for a quick read with a message of equality and kindness then pick this one. As a reader you get to be a part of her crazy Hollywood life and then a part of her life as a wife and dog owner, as normal as us. It provides honest truths about life, love, and everything in between.
