A Skincare Routine Not For The Faint of Heart

Hi, I’m Mary and I spend around 30 minutes of my day applying skincare. That is 210 minutes a week, 840 a month, and 10,080 a year. AKA 168 hours of my year is spent on my skincare routine. And where has that got me… not that far so I’m really hoping I’ll look 30 when I hit 50. It’s a preventative measure, at least that’s how I’m rationalizing this to myself. But honestly, it has changed my skin for the better and I actually enjoy the process. So if you want to know what an esthetician’s skincare regimen looks like here it is:

*Disclaimer, everyone’s skin is different so please don’t throw out your skincare to copy mine then cry to me when you don’t have glowy, fresh, acne free skin. Products work differently for everyone and everyone’s body and skin absorb products differently. These are just helpful suggestions and products that I enjoy. If you want help with your personal skincare routine come see me at Salt and I’ll give you tons of recommendations!

Also, before we begin let me tell you a little about my skin: I have oil glands straight from the devil himself and I produce massive amounts of oil throughout the day. I have adult acne which started around 22, mainly cystic around my lips and chin which is caused from hormones and then they stick around. Also have under the skin spots on my cheeks which cause redness. Thankfully I don’t have scaring and hardly any age and sun spots. I cut out most dairy (other that cheese because I have no self control) which has helped a ton with my acne. I don’t have a lot of sensitivity, I don’t burn in sunlight, I don’t smoke, and I wear a moderate amount of makeup.  Okay, let’s get into it.

Morning Routine:

Green Tea Milk Wash from Farmhouse Fresh (available at Salt)

I really just want to get all the sweat and impurities off my skin from my sleep with this cleanse. This one does a really great job of cleansing my skin while not drying it out and balancing my pH levels.

C-Firma Day Serum from Drunk Elephant (available at Sephora)

My favorite vitamin C serum, this baby is packed with antioxidants and fruit enzymes to give an extra brightening effect. I saw results within a week which is crazyyyy for a serum. Most of the redness around my cheeks and nose is gone and this product is to thank for that.

Toleriane Double Repair Moisturizer from La Roche-Posay (available at Ulta)

Lightweight, non-comedogenic, and fragrance free are all things I look for in a moisturizer. Add in 30 SPF and a low price point and I’m hooked for life.

U.F.O. Ultra-Clarifying Face Oil from Sunday Riley (available at Sephora)

I take two drops in my fingers and mix it in with my moisturizer. The salicylic acid helps heal my breakouts while milk thistle, camomile, and cucumber extract help control redness without a greasy residue. Fair warning though, it smells horrible.

Vitamin Berry Facial Tonic from Farmhouse Fresh (available at Salt)

This vegan toner is amazing at making my pores look smaller while adding some moisture from rose water to prep my skin for makeup application.

Nighttime Routine:

Midnight Recovery Botanical Cleansing Oil from Kiehl’s (available at Sephora)

Y’all, this s*%$ is bomb. I only use it when I have a full face of makeup and it takes it off like a champ. Plus the lavender scent helps me to unwind and signals my brain that it’s almost bedtime.

Kale + Green Tea Spinach Vitamins Age Prevention Cleanser from Youth To The People (available at Sephora)

I legit have nothing bad to say about this, which is rare. The pump is great, the glass jar is heavy duty while still looking classy, the smell is natural but not gross, the packaging is from recyclable materials.  I’ve never in my life used a cleanser that foams up and deep cleanses your skin without drying it out what so ever. If I could pick one skincare product to use for the rest of my life, it may just be this babe. If you can’t tell by now, I have a love affair with this cleanser.

Benefiance WrinkleResist24 Balancing Softener Enriched by Shiseido (available at Sephora)

This bad boy is expensive for a toner but worth it. Shiseido is such a luxury skincare brand and the products feel like silk. A few drops of this on a Shiseido cotton pad (yes I am that obnoxious and buy specific cotton pads) makes my skin so much more receptive to my skincare. It balances oils, replenishes, and fights signs of aging like texture and dark spots.

Crow Catcher by Farmhouse Fresh (available at Salt)

Eye creams don’t impress me much but this one has actually made a difference in my wrinkles and that’s really all I am looking for. Concealer doesn’t crease the next morning and it helps me look like I have my life together. For those of you like me that use a retinol, eye creams are a barrier for the eye area so put them on right before!

Differin Gel by Differin (available at Ulta)

Differin is the first over the counter retinol acne treatment and it has changed my life. At 0.1% adapalene it was sold as a dermatologist prescription only medication for over 20 years. I usually use this every other night but sometimes two nights in a row followed with a one night break if I’m breaking out.

There is a reason this gem has all 5 stars on Sephora’s website: because it is magic in a bottle. Luna is a treatment in an oil so don’t go to purchase it thinking it is a retinol serum. I love this product when my skin is feeling dull or lacking life. I wake up the next morning and my skin is plump and even toned and I feel like a new woman. On the nights when I’m not using Differin I switch between this and my next product.

Vitamin A Serum from Mad Hippie (available at Salt)

If you are in your 20s or 30s you need this. Or if you are in your 40s and above and have never tried a retinol (what are you doing???) then you also need this. Vitamin A is a natural form of retinol, which means it helps your cell turnover. This chemical exfoliation serum helps with dark spots, acne, sun damage, and surface wrinkles. It is a perfect starter retinol and my go-to when my skin is feeling sensitive.

Three Milk Ageless Night Cream from Farmhouse Fresh (available at Salt)

Clearly I am a fan of Farmhouse Fresh products and if you try any of them you’ll see why. When they finally came out with a night cream I celebrated with a high pitched scream then bought one for each of my bathrooms. It is thick without being sticky and the time release formula helps my oily skin from looking like an oil spill.

Agave Lip Mask from Bite Beauty (available at Sephora)

Last, but my favorite product so certainly not least, is this lip mask. It comes in four colors/ flavors which all taste great. It is crafted with agave and jojoba oil to help my cracked, dry lips plump up with hydration. It stays put all night which is perfect for me since I’m a night breather and tend to slobber (we all have our faults, let me live. also sorry to the guys’ pillows I’ve ruined.).

Welp, that’s it. That is where all my time goes. Let me know if you love these as much as me and come see me at Salt to get your skincare on track!
